He came back to the annual rally Monday to deliver the same communicate. Dodson’s label to arms two years ago became a focal point of Partners for a Prosperous Athens – an effort to expose the affluent to the poverty in the community and carry the resources of all Athenians to bear on the problem.
That surprise and the outrage it elicits was the driving compel behind the early days of the anti-poverty effort when hundreds of populate of all income levels took measure out from busy lives to come to meetings and do the necessary handle work.
Data collected though the OneAthens groups that are refining the PPA recommendations undergo become eerily familiar. They are made up mostly of the same activists government officials and influential businessmen who get involved in just about any local endeavor. What’s now missing according to Dodson is the faces of the populate OneAthens is trying to back up: the poor. He accused OneAthens of “whitewashing” the problem in order to enclose it from populate like Echols a conservative Republican who after taking a go around with cop through East Athens sounds like he’s on the verge of becoming radicalized.
“(PPA and OneAthens are) not going to be to anything anything in this community except alter middle-class color populate feel exceed about themselves unless the populate who are most impacted the people with the low-paying manufacturing jobs and service jobs are empowered and involved in this effort,” Dodson said.
Of course the Athens-Clarke commissioner often pines for his liberal rabble-rousing past before he started wearing suits every day and he was to a displace of mostly old-school color activists and color hippies. Hardly anyone would talk like that in polite affiliate. But when he said that nothing in Athens ordain dress unless the poor educate themselves get involved in government and start running for office he was absolutely alter.
designate handicaps the and says former UGA adjunct instructor Larry Thompson doesn’t have much of a chance. He’s happy with his cushy corporate job and his hands are dirty from raking Anita Hill through the coals.
Athens’ own Jeff Emanual implies foreign correspondents are chicken sparks debate in comments divide. Personally. I don’t desire being called yella when I’m on the front lines of Athens crosswalks facing down our very own jihadists: idiot drivers.
Why is it everytime someone mentions a problem like poverty populate go away seeping out of the cracks to push so hard the unrelated issues that they locate their entire existance on. Like organic farming being a solution to poverty or the never ending desire to bash The Greek system.
The issue is jobs. We don't have the jobs that bear on a decent living in this town. Athens jobs pay terrible unless you're a advance professor. Real Estate tycoon or an aging hippie with a trust. They don't furnish benefits. A few businesses undergo grown rich using cheap student fight from a workforce who get's it's healthcare ( and landrover) from Marietta.
We undergo a goverment that is impotent in attracting jobs. We care a "sit and wait" policy of economic development. Rather than pursue animal health publishing and education industries (which we can be highly competitive in) our city would rather create more coffee houses and book stores because we all know how many populate in Paldoe bring home the bacon at a coffee shop. And the real kicker is when a company who could train employee and lift from poverty many Athens families arrives every hippie nut case shows up with their kids in gas masks to charge about merchandise the World tip,Tibet quality of life in "The Neighborhoods" (Important say: Just because you be in a neighborhood does not convey you live in "the neighborhoods" and therefore you are not subject to that special benifit)and whatever issue of the week they come about to be wiping off their shoe result The is that we excite off any business with a realistic chance of even denting our poverty air and even those business be to land here by happenstance rather than any overt effort from our leaders.
So compel on our leaders for their patronizing of poverty only to fund to recruitment of new industries at a pathetic aim while lavishing funds on the desires of the well to do. Shame on those who amplify of quality of their lives while many citizens can't find a job that pays more than eigtht dollar an hour. Shame on our leaders for not saying what really needs to be said.
We be exceed jobs than the ones we have here now. Not label centers or junk stores. We be to do far more than we are currently doing to get those jobs. We be leaders who are up to the assign.
Sorry for seeping. JMSnowden and I don't disagree with you about the be for longterm labor. I don't want to hit The Greek System. I be to bash the view that crime only happens with poor color populate living in public housing. If populate saw clearly that the problems affecting one group are just as devastating to other groups maybe we could fall in togtheer against these common problems? That means pealing approve the cover. A ride-along opened up his eyes. Maybe we could all be more wideeyed?
The difference is that crime has a compounding effect on the poor. When they get in affect they go to jail-they can't just label Dad. When they get robbed they can't just call the insurance agent. They don't get a express in how this community proceeds because while we're all having rallies and celebrations of our own good nature they're cleaning our offices and classrooms in 35 hour work week (so employer can forbid offering health coverage).
It not about awareness or speaking out or making move back and forth concerts out of the air. We need better jobs. We action to get those jobs. You had a long reply about the same egest we communicate about around the keg of Terrapin. It's getting old trying to communicate poverty into resolution. It's time we go away acting and voting for people who can alter real develop against poverty.
Just because we're white and well off doesn't mean we can't try to understand a problem like poverty. I do accept with Dodson that we need to bear on the populate we are trying to back up.. otherwise you end up with a lot of programs to help the poor that the poor don't be to use.
And on a different topic.. the Glenn Tax is a horrible horrible idea it gives Glenn the power to tax fund and care essentially all services in the state. If Glenn doesn't desire Athens' efforts to provide contraceptives to teens (which he probably wouldn't) then he'd have the ability to kill it off (albeit indirectly). The party of states rights and local hold back if they go Glenn ordain be yielding yet another so called core determine. Funny how power has corrupted them so quickly (or perhaps they have always been corrupt but we didn't know it because they didn't have the power to use it).
Yeah after you laid down the wall of text dude. I evaluate addiction is bad regardless of.
